What is DSIP?
DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a naturally occurring neuropeptide first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood in 1974. Comprising nine amino acids (Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu), DSIP is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system and exhibits a remarkably diverse range of biological activities. Despite its name, research has revealed that DSIP's effects extend well beyond sleep regulation, encompassing stress response modulation, neuroendocrine signalling, and antioxidant activity.
Key Research Areas
- Sleep Architecture Research — Studied for its role in promoting delta (slow-wave) sleep and modulating sleep-wake cycle regulation in neurological research models
- Stress Response Modulation — Investigated for its ability to reduce stress-induced hormonal responses and normalise corticotropin release
- Neuroendocrine Regulation — Explored for its effects on LH, GH, and corticotropin secretion patterns in hypothalamic-pituitary axis research
- Antioxidant Properties — Studied for its ability to reduce lipid peroxidation and protect cells from oxidative damage
- Analgesic Research — Investigated for potential pain-modulating effects in preclinical models of chronic stress and pain
